Can i bring home a new puppy in a home of 2 cats?

one of my cats is very loving,he is friendly to everyone,but my other cat which is about 4 is very agressive.she loves me,and my family,but when unknown strangers come in the house,she will usually hiss. one time she actually pounced and tried to attack my cousin. he kept coming over and they finally made peace,but it took awhile.ive been wanting a dog forawhile,but im not sure how the cat will react.i dont want to cause any harm to the dog,but isnt there a way to make then "tolerate" eachother?
