Help?! I can't crack my jaw anymore?!?
YES, you have TMJ and yes, when your jaw stops making noises, it means that your condition has gotten worse. As long as the jaw still makes noises it means that the articular disk is able to go back into place to allow the mouth to open wide. When the noises stop it means that the disk in unable to go back into joint and opening more than 3 fingers will be painful and difficult. It has basically become stuck closed. If you try to force your jaw to open wider when the disk is out of place, you will stretch the ligaments and muscles of the TMJ and make your condition worse. There's nothing that you can do once you have a closed lock without reduction (the TMJ term that describes your problem). If you're lucky, some day it may just pop back into place out of the blue but then it will simply dislocate again and the whole scenario will just keep repeating until you get treated by a dentist who knows how to do TMJ.
